Canceling women Democrats draw online flak after 35trn spending bill uses non-gendered terms for mothers and women
The Democratic Party has been accused of trying to âerase womenâ after it emerged that its $3.5 trillion infrastructure spending bill uses the terms âbirthing,â âlactatingâ and âpregnantâ persons alongside âwomenâ and âmother.â
In all, the spending package â" one part of the Biden administrationâs âBuild Back Betterâ program â" uses the word âmotherâ three times and the word âmaternalâ 50 times. Meanwhile, the word âwomenâ appears on 20 occasions in a number of contexts, including domestic violence, business ownership, health insurance and maternity-related concerns.
However, it also mentions the phrase âpregnant, lactating, and postpartum individualsâ in 11 instances when focusing on maternal health conditions and concerns â" with the individual descriptor terms making more appearances throughout the 2,465-page document.
In addition, there also appears to be inconsistent usage of gender-specific and non-gendered language. For instance, the phrase is used as a whole some four times in Section 31045 of the bill, which deals with âfunding for maternal mental health equity grant programs.â
Also on rt.com âBodies with vaginasâ?! Lancet slammed for âerasing womenâ after promoting latest issue with controversial quoteThe Democratsâ use of âinclusive languageâ marks a departure from the partyâs recent Womenâs Health Protection Act, which was passed by the House of Representatives last week. The legislation does not include gender-neutral references, and instead uses the terms âwomanâ and âwomenâ once and 15 times respectively when discussing reproductive issues, pregnancy and abortion.
But it does note that the terms âwomanâ and âwomenâ were used to âreflect the identity of the majority of people targeted and affected by restrictions on abortion services.â Besides stating that access to abortion services was âcritical to the health of every person capable of becoming pregnant,â the act was âintended to protect all people with the capacity for pregnancy â" cisgender women, transgender men, non-binary individuals, those who identify with a different gender, and others.â
A similar situation played out in June with the Biden administrationâs budget proposal for 2022 drawing controversy over the use of the phrase âbirthing peopleâ instead of mothers in a portion that deals with maternal mortality rates.
The section begins by using the gender-specific terms âmaternalâ and âwomen of colorâ to note that the US has the âhighest maternal mortality rate among developed nationsâ but then switches to the term âbirthing peopleâ when allocating over $200 million to tackle the issue. As well, that funding includes investments to âimplement implicit bias training for healthcare providers.â

One person suggested using the term âgeneric meatsackâ would be âprogressive enough.â
It's like they are so attached to group/identity politics that they have to refer to individual human beings like they have cooties or something.

â" Piper Bayard (@PiperBayard) October 1, 2021âIf you call me a âbirthing personâ or âpregnant person,â I donât trust you with my health,â tweeted conservative commentator Katie Pavlich.
A number of commenters questioned what the equivalent terms for men would be, while others wondered what would happen âwhen a non-birthing person decides to identify as a birthing person.â
What is a male called?? Impregnating person? Ejaculating person? Non lactating? We need answers ððð
â" James Hartman (@therealbabajim) September 30, 2021Also, what happens when a non-birthing person decides to identify as a birthing person? Can we go back to using woman? If yes then I identify as a birthing person.
â" Dr. Imma Maskless Neanderthal Terrorist Ù (@xra22) September 30, 2021But a few users defended the usage, with one person shrugging off the controversy since âRepublicans view women as nothing more than an incubator.â
