Sword-wielding man dressed in full NINJA GARB injures 2 US special ops troops in midnight attack at California airfield
A man suited up in ninja gear launched a daring nighttime assault on US special forces troops at an airfield north of LA, slashing one with a katana sword and hurling a large rock at another before fleeing. He was later arrested.
Identified as Gino Rivera, 35, the man showed up at the Inyokern Airport â" located in the Mojave Desert some 100 miles north of Los Angeles, California â" around 1am on September 18, decked out in a ninja get-up and wielding a large sword, the Kern County Sheriffâs office announced on Friday.
âOn 9/18/21 at 1:10 AM, Ridgecrest Substation deputies responded to Inyokern Airport for an assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies discovered the suspect had assaulted a victim with a sword and thrown a rock through a hangar window, hitting an additional victim in the head,â said the sheriffâs office, which was called in to assist the Ridgecrest PD.

â" Kern County Sheriff's Office (@KernCoSheriff) October 1, 2021The bizarre incident â" first noted by Stars and Stripes, the Pentagonâs official press organ â" was initially outlined in an unconfirmed military incident report that appeared on social media.
The report states that an unnamed Army staff sergeant â" referred to only as âSSGâ in the document â" was smoking a cigarette near a hangar at the airfield âwhen an unknown person wearing full ninja garb, [including] a katana sword,â approached him.
âThe person wearing the ninja garb stated âdo you know who I am?â SSG replied âNo.â The unknown person then asked âdo you know where my family is?â SSG again stated âno,ââ the report said.
At this point, the person in ninja garb began to slash at SSG, striking his phone and his knee and leg. SSG immediately began running through the parking lot trying to evade the unknown person. SSG jumped the fence and entered the [airportâs administrative] building.

After a brief while, the man was said to have left, but returned a few minutes later carrying a âlarge block of asphalt,â which he proceeded to hurl âthrough the window of the admin building,â striking the Army captain (âin the head,â as the sheriffâs office would later reveal).
Fortunately, the staff sergeant and captain were able to return to duty soon after the attack, sustaining only minor injuries, though both required stitches, the incident report said. Both soldiers belong to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) â" dubbed âNight Stalkersâ due to their âproficiency in nighttime operations,â according to the US Special Operations Command.
A bulletin from the Ridgecrest PD dated September 18 also appears to make mention of the incident, reporting a call about a âmale [subject] in a ninja costumeâ âwith a swordâ who was spotted at the airfieldâs parking lot, and that there was âat least one victimâ at the scene. The same bulletin noted that about 20 minutes later, officers received another call about individuals âhunkered down in a hanger wondering where help is,â but added that the call was âreferred to [another] agency,â presumably referring to the Kern County Sheriffâs Office.
Rivera, who was arrested after fleeing the airfield, now faces a litany of charges, including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon, brandishing a weapon with the intent to resist or prevent an arrest, vandalism and obstructing a peace officer in the discharge of their duties. His motive remains a mystery.
