Elon Musk puts 10 Tesla stock sale to TWITTER POLL promises to stick to result
Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk asked the public whether he should sell 10% of his stock in his electric car company, Tesla, promising to abide by the result in a move which shocked social media users.
In a tweet on Saturday, Musk asked his followers to vote either yes or no to the sale of the stocks, which are valued at around $21 billion.
âMuch is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock. Do you support this?â he questioned, promising to âabide by the results of this poll, whichever way it goes.â
Musk â" who is the worldâs richest man with a net worth of over $318 billion â" also claimed to ânot take a cash salary or bonus from anywhere,â and explained, âthus the only way for me to pay taxes personally is to sell stock.â
Within just a few hours, over 1.3 million people voted in the poll, with the âyesâ faction holding a slight majority.
âWe are witnessing the Twitter masses deciding the outcome of a $25B coin flip,â reacted venture capital investor and billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya.
Detractors have accused Musk of attempting to tank Teslaâs stock. âThis would dilute the public float considerably, hurting your shareholders who love & support you,â film director, screenwriter and entrepreneur Jonathan Stokes tweeted.
You do realize that Tesla stock will now tank on Monday because of this, thus ending the awesome run the stock has made the last month. Posts like this is taking money out of the pockets of the people who have believed in you and your company the most. ð

â" Nancy Pelosi Portfolio Tracker (@NancyTracker) November 6, 2021Oregon's senior Democratic Senator, Ron Wyden seized the opportunity to call for the introduction of the âBillionaires Income Tax.â
âWhether or not the worldâs wealthiest man pays any taxes at all shouldnât depend on the results of a Twitter poll,â he protested.
Others, however, supported the move.
âMakes sense. If your unrealized gains are going to be taxed, you need to make sure to have the realized gains to cover the payment,â weighed in investor Scott Melker. âMess with billionaires, you might get a market crash. Point made.â
NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden also appeared to support Muskâs decision, tweeting, âTesla stock price is too high imo,â in apparent reference to one of Muskâs own posts.
Itâs not the first time that Teslaâs stock has been subject to one of Muskâs Twitter posts.
In May 2020, Musk famously tweeted that Teslaâs stock prices were âtoo highâ â" a post which caused Tesla stocks to fall by more than 11 percent.
Musk has also previously been faulted for tanking the cost of Bitcoin with these social media posts.
